Adalhi Aranda
Founder & Director
Adalhi Aranda
Founder & Director
In 1994, Adalhí relocated to the US, where she joined Evansville Dance Theatre, IN, as a soloist and Ballet Mistress. In 1999, she joined the Lexington Ballet Co., Ballet Theatre of Chicago, and Kentucky Ballet Theatre. Throughout her performing years, she was honored to perform principal and soloist roles such as the Sugar Plum Fairy in "The Nutcracker," Swanilda in "Coppelia," and the Lilac Fairy in "Sleeping Beauty," among others.
Her teaching journey began at age 19, alongside her performing career, spanning students of all ages and backgrounds. She eagerly seized opportunities to instruct underserved students, including those from rural communities like Wolfe Co., Kentucky.
While in Mexico, Adalhí pursued graphic design at the Universidad Iberoamericana, later continuing her education in visual arts at the University of Southern Indiana and Spencerian College, in the USA, all while actively dancing and teaching.
Driven by her passion for teaching, Adalhí envisioned a nurturing environment where every child could access top-tier dance education and performance opportunities. This vision materialized in 2003 with the founding of Bluegrass Youth Ballet (BYB), a vibrant community dedicated to fostering meaningful cultural experiences and a strong sense of diversity, belonging, and well-being.
In recognition of her achievements, Adalhí was honored with the Minority Business of the Year Award in 2005. In 2008, BYB transitioned to a 501(c)(3) organization, solidifying its commitment to serving the community. Her dedication to arts education earned her the Arts Educator of the Year award from the National Society of Arts and Letters Chapter Kentucky in 2011.
Adalhí's steadfast dedication to diversity and arts education is vividly showcased in her original productions, which often feature unique narratives drawn from various cultures. These performances incorporate bilingual narration and a rich tapestry of dance forms from around the globe, imparting profound cultural and educational messages to our community.
Some notable full-length productions include:
"Dia de los Muertos, A Mexican Celebration of Life and Death", "Alebrijes, A Dream that Became Art", "Arabella’s Journey", "The Nightingale", "Art Rhapsody", "Sorcerer’s Apprentice", "The Little Mermaid", "Cinderella", "Alice in Wonderland", "Rapunzel" in addition to many short pieces such a “Huapango”, and “Tango Soul”.
These productions are distinguished by Adalhí's unique artistic style and their ability to engage audiences with compelling cultural narratives.
Adalhí's impact extends beyond her leadership at Bluegrass Youth Ballet (BYB). She has also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Kentucky Dance Department and directed "Señora Tortuga" at the Lexington Children’s Theatre. In 2014, BYB was selected to be featured by the Small Business Revolution, a national organization spotlighting unique businesses across the country. Renowned photojournalist Ed Kashi from National Geographic produced an article and photos highlighting BYB.
Several of Adalhí’s students have embarked on successful professional dance careers, joining prestigious companies such as the New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Augsburg Ballett, Cincinnati Ballet, Atlantic City Ballet, Georgia Ballet, and others.
Outside of her teaching endeavors, Adalhí finds joy in traveling, painting, hiking, and immersing herself in nature and music. She mostly enjoys spending time with her two children and four cats. Her passion for painting and art creation allows her to express herself dynamically through color and form.
